From Lumbering to Manufacturing, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, has a Long and Storied History of Production and Productivity

Dempsey Uniform is a highly respected industry leader.

Williamsport was the site of 1763’s “Battle of Muncy Hills” – one of the earliest conflicts between the British and Indians during the era of the French and Indian Wars. Eventually, in 1768, hostilities were settled by the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, which enabled colonists from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to use gifts and cash to purchase land from the Iroquois. Over time, settlers migrated into these new lands, relying on the region’s vast natural resources to help them forge a place for themselves in the wilderness.

As time passed, the area became known for the production of lumber, which was transported South via the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. In the late 19th century, Williamsport was widely considered to be, “The Lumber Capital of the World.” After the West Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal system wound its way through Williamsport, augmenting river transportation, the town was able to bring in iron and construct a foundry.

Williamsport’s lumber transport played a significant role in its history as a “station” on the Underground Railroad. Local abolitionist Daniel Hughes was a river raftsman who transported logs as far south as Maryland and returned with escaped slaves. The slaves were hidden in his barn and in caves behind his home, where they were fed and the sick nursed back to health. With the help of Robert Fairies, another abolitionist who also happened to be the President of the Williamsport-Elmira Railroad, the escapees were transported in railroad baggage cars to the next “station” in Trout Run, and eventually on to Elmira, New York, other free states, and Canada.

Over the years, lumber production has given way to more technical industries, including Lycoming Aircraft Engines, a division of Textron, based in Williamsport. The city is home to West Pharmaceutical Services, producers of injectable therapies and insulin pumps, as well as a manufacturing facility for the Lonza Group, AG, a Swiss biotech and pharmaceutical company that produces specialty chemicals for personal care, industrial, and pharmaceutical applications. Also based in Williamsport is Shop-Vac, manufacturers of wet/dry vacuums for industrial, commercial, contractor, and consumer use. Bethlehem Wire Rope, the largest wire rope and braided cable manufacturer in the country, has 620,000 square feet of production space located on 46 acres in Williamsport. The city is also the headquarters for Brodart, a manufacturer and supplier of equipment, specialty items, and furniture for libraries and book stores.

More recently, due to its location above the highly productive Marcellus Shale formation, Williamsport has become a center of natural gas production. Whether team members work in the field, in the office, or on the road, wearing professional uniforms helps present employers in the best possible light. Dempsey Uniform & Supply supplies uniform rentals to many commercial and industrial customers in the Williamsport area, including Staiman Recycling Corporation and Port Elevator.
