From Iron Mining to Tourism, Economic Drivers in Vernon, New Jersey, have Changed with the Times

Vernon Township is the largest town in Sussex County, New Jersey, the northernmost county in the peanut-shaped state. The population, only around 25,000, spreads across nearly 70 square miles of rural landscape. It lies at the southern extreme of the Catskill mountain region, and is well known for its natural beauty and terrific skiing. It’s only an hour’s drive from New York City and is always included in the greater New York census area.

It’s not entirely clear how the township got its name, but the theory favored by historian Robert J. Dupont Jr. describes an homage to Admiral Edward Vernon. This connection feels a little tenuous, however, based on the local Masonic Lodge having been named Mount Vernon in honor of President George Washington’s home. Washington’s Mount Vernon was so named because Washington’s brother Lawrence served in the military with Admiral Vernon. Also, Washington was elected President in 1792 and the township was incorporated in 1793, right in the midst of the patriotic fervor that proliferated in the wake of the American Revolution.

In fact, the name Vernon was so popular, that for a time there were two Vernons in New Jersey, this one in Sussex County and another located in Essex County. When Post Offices were established in the two towns, the one in Essex County changed its name to Verona to avoid any confusion.

In its early days, Vernon was known for farming and iron mining. The Canistear, Pochuk, and Williams mines made up an industry that was key to early development in the area. Production decline in those mines and competition from western iron mines eventually put the iron miners out of business. Today, Vernon’s primary draws are real estate, tourism, and skiing. Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply provides bed linens, uniform rentals, and facility supplies to a wide range of clientele active in Vernon’s hospitality and tourism industry.

One ski resort, originally known as Hidden Valley, closed as a commercial enterprise in 2013 but has since reopened as the National Winter Activity Center. The NWAC uses winter sports and access to nutritious meals as a means to promote healthy lifestyles for regional youth ages 6 through 17. Getting kids into the mountains for skiing, snowboarding, and other activities is the goal, and making it fun and rewarding is the draw. The Center cooperates with schools and organizations, like the YMCA and the Girl Scouts, to offer structured winter fitness programs designed to encourage a lifelong habit of regular winter exercise. Sponsors include U.S. Ski and Snowboard, the International Ski Federation, SnowSports Industries America, the National Winter Sports Education Foundation, and the Boy and Girls Clubs of America.

The Township’s small segment of the tech industry is based on the benefit of its elevation: satellite uplinks for Sirius/XM and SES Americom. SES Americom was started by RCA and acquired by General Electric. Most recently, it was purchased by SES, a Luxembourg satellite owner and operator.
