Building on its Agricultural Roots, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, is embracing “Endless Possibilities”

Originally formed in 1810 as what was then known as Ontario County, Bradford County was renamed two years later in honor of William Bradford, the second Attorney General of the United States. George Washington appointed him to the esteemed position after Bradford had served faithfully as Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Bradford County’s seat is the Borough of Towanda – a name that means “burial ground” in the Algonquian language. This small center of civilization seems almost magically carved out of the surrounding forests, sprawling riverbeds, and Endless Mountains.

Although agriculture and dairy farming have always played a major role in the local economy, tourism has emerged as a large and growing industry in Bradford County. The region offers multiple attractions that both celebrate and preserve its early history.

The LeRoy Heritage Museum is a modern museum with fascinating exhibits that educate visitors about the local lumbering and mining industry, and offer colorful anecdotes about famous locals who made the area a success against the odds.

Just a short drive away, the Wyalusing Valley Museum houses an extensive collection of Native American stone artifacts, manuscripts, historic photographs, military memorabilia, and common household goods from around the Wyalusing Creek area. Browsing there for an afternoon is a terrific way to get a sense of what life must have been like back in the day.

At the Tioga Point Museum, a fascinating juxtaposition of art and artifacts – from the local region and around the world – is on display for public viewing. Visitors interested in marksmanship will appreciate the firearm collection, donated by the Waverly School District, which features old and rare models. Another item of note is the Pacific Seashell Collection, an impressively diverse assortment. As new and interesting displays become available, the Museum rotates its collection accordingly to provide ongoing entertainment and educational opportunities for residents and tourists alike.

The Home Textile Tool Museum showcases a collection of items used to make homespun cloth and clothing, from an era when homes were expected to be as self-sufficient as possible. Common practices at the time included cultivating flax, shearing sheep, spinning thread, weaving cloth, dying items with natural materials, and making clothing. Many of these items, little more than mysteries to us today, were crafted by hand or with the help of simple machines.

As the decades have rolled by, advancements in technology and industry have changed many things, but the concept of making things is still integral to the stability of Bradford County’s economy. In 2015, according to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center, the manufacturing sector was the second largest employer in the region, just behind healthcare and ahead of retailing, hospitality services, and mining. Relying on an inspiring combination of toil and talent, manufacturers of wood-crafted items like cabinets, doors, windows, and other such items are commonplace. Plus, commercial activities like concrete manufacturing, lumbering, and quarrying are plentiful and prosperous. Headquartered in Dunmore, just under 2 hours from the edge of Bradford County, Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply understands what it takes to build a successful company. We’re pleased to do our part in helping Bradford County’s business community leverage technology to better serve its customers. In addition to uniform rentals, linen rentals, and facility supplies, we offer RFID uniform tracking, computerized linen tracking, and high-tech laundering formulas.
