In West Milford Township, New Jersey, Location Drives Opportunity

West Milford was initially settled by Dutch immigrants who moved from a town named Milford (now known as Newark, New Jersey) and called their new settlement New Milford. However, they were not the only group of Dutch settlers to leave Milford and start a community of the same name. The resulting confusion was eventually eliminated when the two New Milfords applied for Post Offices. The accepted storyline goes like this: the “other” New Milford’s application was processed first, after which a postal bureaucrat named this town West Milford.

In 1766, in hopes of establishing a mini-industrial plantation, German ironmaster Peter Hasenclever brought 500 ironworkers and their families to West Milford from his home country. The sole purpose of the operation was to manufacture iron and iron products on an industrial scale – relative to that day and age. His company, Long Pond Ironworks, made more than just tools. It supplied a breadth of materials to the Continental Army during the Revolution and to the United States Army. In 1882, competition from iron works powered by the newly popular Pennsylvania anthracite coal forced its doors closed.

The Long Pond Ironworks Historic District, which includes Long Pond Ironworks State Park, is currently in restoration mode. Visitors can view furnaces, waterwheels, and other relics and artifacts from the old iron working days. A few sites are fully restored, some are more or less intact, and others lie in ruins. Tourists get a sense of everyday life in the settlement by walking through original homes, workshops, icehouses, a church, a post office, and a schoolhouse. The country store has even been restored as a museum that chronicles the history of the ironworks, as well as the people who lived and worked there.

Long Pond Ironworks State Park offers excellent boating, fishing, and hiking. Angling enthusiasts appreciate the Monksville Reservoir for its muskellunge, walleye, bass, and trout. Green Turtle Pond is home to even more fishing spots, great scenery, and abundant wildlife. Depending on the season, large portions of the park are open for hunting with a permit. There are miles of trails for mountain biking and horseback riding, and winter activities include ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

The Greenwood Lake Airport is located on top of a mountain ridge, just South of the lake where Long Pond Ironworks was first established. It has two landing strips – one long enough to handle small jets – and is the home of Sky Training, a company that offers flying lessons. Their flying tours of the area offer incredible bird’s-eye views of the lakes, forests, and highlands. Sky Training also conducts New York City air tours that enable passengers to relax and view famous landmarks from far above the crowds, traffic, and noise. Pilots bringing seaplanes into the area are welcome to land them in a specific, separate section of Greenwood Lake.

It’s no surprise that businesses in West Milford Township have been built to leverage its two greatest strengths: proximity to population centers to the South, and scenic landscapes to the North. The resulting, unusual mix of retail, commercial, and industrial enterprises is supported by a number of quality-driven service companies, including Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply. We provide uniform rentals, linen rentals, laundry services, and facility supplies to a wide range of businesses located in West Milford Township and the surrounding counties.
