Lucrative Career Opportunities Abound in Northern Virginia

While it’s hard to perfectly define Northern Virginia, most natives agree it includes the counties of Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax, along with independent cities like Alexandria, Falls Church, and Manassas. The region is located within comfortable commuting distance to Washington D.C. and lies southwest of the District. A portion of Northern Virginia was initially included in the District when President George Washington first created it, but the land was later returned to the state in 1846.

The area was home to some of America’s earliest colonies, starting with Jamestown in 1607. Beginning around 1673, the land became known as The Northern Neck after it was given to Thomas Lord Culpeper and Henry Earl of Arlington, both of whose names live on in county and city monikers. The granted land was a reward for loyalty to King Charles II during the English Civil Wars, after which a parliamentary government was formed. Culpeper served as the Colonial Governor of the region, but his reign was ill-fated. He was forced to resign after he was caught misappropriating colony funds.

In more recent history, the area has grown and prospered as home to major departments and facilities of the Federal Government, including The Pentagon, both National and Dulles airports, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the headquarters of a dozen other major Federal departments and agencies. It attracted numerous technology companies during the Cold War, and became colloquially known as the “Silicon Valley of the East.”

Computer networking on behalf of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), based there, was the project that eventually evolved into the modern Internet. The first Internet Service Providers (ISPs) commercialized the internet in this region. It is even believed that nearly 70% of U.S. internet data passes through centers located in Loudon County. Amazon’s Cloud services are housed in the 6 million square feet of data center floor space. Telecom and computer companies now or formerly headquartered in Northern Virginia include AOL, Nextel/Sprint (now NII Holdings), PSINet, MCI Communications, and UUNET – one of the original and still significant ISPs. Verisign, the company that administers the two major Internet domains – .com and .net – is located there as well.

In addition to the technology base, multiple defense contractors are based in or have a significant presence in Northern Virginia. The reason why contractors are attracted to the town is its proximity to the Pentagon, the Department of Defense, the Defense Logistics Agency, and many talented contractors and thought leaders. Companies represented include General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, Lockheed-Martin, and more.

Not surprisingly, the top two counties in the nation for median income can be found in Northern Virginia. Former Governor Bob McDonnell described Northern Virginia as “the economic engine of the state” as it boasts more than a third more office space than Washington D.C., and 50% more than the suburbs in Maryland to the north. The region enjoys higher job growth and has a lower unemployment rate compared to many other parts of the country. At Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, we are proud to supply professional uniform rentals, linen services, and a wide array of facility supplies to commercial, industrial, and business ventures – including the Trump National Golf Club – throughout Northern Virginia and the surrounding areas.
