Bethesda, known for its Proximity to Washington D.C., is Brimming with a Highly Educated Population

Originating in 1694 as a small homestead and tobacco farm, the city of Bethesda, Maryland, was the beneficiary of expanding trade between towns and villages, eventually evolving into a settlement christened “Darcy’s Store”. As the population grew, residents decided the town needed a more appropriate name. In deference to the local Presbyterian Church, a popular establishment often called the Bethesda Meeting House, the new name of Bethesda or “House of Mercy” was established in 1871. As America advanced and our fledgling government began to take on a more definitive shape, Bethesda’s location near Washington D.C. became increasingly important. Major corporations and a myriad of government offices made their home in the city, availing themselves of advances in transportation to remain just minutes away from the center of American government. This proximity resulted in business dealings that laid the foundation for the infrastructure of economic and cultural strength the city enjoys to this day.

Art lovers always enjoy a visit to the Waverly Street Gallery, one of the oldest fine art galleries in the area. Showcasing local and international art, in a wide range of media, the Gallery houses a collection that includes everything from the beautiful wood sculptures of the Argentinean artist Norma Schwartz, to the entrancing prints of Barbara Bickley. The “Play in a Day” showcases local professional theater companies who compete to write and produce a themed play within a 24 hour period. At other times, you might consider attending The Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards or The Bethesda Film Festival, celebratory screenings of the work of local and regional documentary filmmakers. In addition to bringing in local and national authors to discuss their works, The Bethesda Literary Festival hosts writing contests for the interested public.

Ranked as the “Best Education City in the Country” (with a population of 50,000 or more) in the 2000 census, the caliber of Bethesda’s workforce has attracted major corporations like Lockheed Martin, Ritz Carlton, and Marriott International. As well-respected companies continue their influx into the city, the availability of good jobs has attracted even more highly qualified people to the area.

In addition to taking advantage of corporate opportunities, residents work in hundreds of small businesses, some of which opened with support from the Maryland Department of Commerce, the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, and the Montgomery County Business Portal. In Bethesda, there are numerous entities devoted to helping businesses launch and grow their operations, regionally, nationally and globally. At Dempsey Uniform & Supply, we are proud to supply uniform rentals, laundry services, and facility supplies to a wide variety of organizations, including the Montgomery County Public Schools, the Tournament Players Club, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring.
