Bridgewater’s Significant Roles from the Earliest Days of America

Created from land purchased from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, Bridgewater Township was initially chartered in 1749 by the government of King George II. During the Revolution, George Washington and his Continental Army found refuge from the winter at Bridgewater’s Middlebrook Encampment. As it was well defended and fortified with natural defenses like mountains, forests, and waterways, the British army was unwilling to risk an assault.

Part of that Encampment has been preserved as a historic site. The land itself was donated to the Washington Campground Association, and every year – on July 4th – the Declaration of Independence is publicly read aloud as part of the celebratory festivities. Middlebrook is also where the first official flag of the United States is said to have flown. Conventional wisdom suggests that Betsy Ross designed the flag, but many records state that the only contribution she made was to change the original six-pointed stars to five points since they were easier to sew.

Another way to experience the area is through visits to nearby parks. Set against the Watchung Mountains, Washington Valley Park is comprised of 719 acres of pine and hemlock forests, wetlands, areas for rock climbing, and a 21-acre reservoir. The park includes 7 miles of trails, some of the best mountain biking in the state, and hawk watching during the migration season. From August through November, the park becomes a way station for thousands of hawks, falcons, and eagles making their way South to winter ranges as far away as Central and South America.

Duke Island Park, also bursting with natural splendor, is more accommodating to those who prefer a civilized approach to nature. It offers biking trails and five separate picnic areas, three of which have a pavilion. Additional picnic tables can be found scattered along the river trail, ideally situated for quick meals between hiking, biking, or fishing in the generously stocked Raritan River.

Owing to its natural setting, Bridgewater’s economy was dominated by agriculture for most of its history. By the middle of the twentieth century, this started to change. Today, the affluent area is heavily influenced by nearby New York City, with its primary employers hailing from the pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries. Known to many as the American Capital of the Pharmaceutical Industry, Bridgewater is home to a host of industry-leading companies including Valeant, Allergan, ConvaTec, and Sanofi. Inside their walls, some of our most exceptional scientists and doctors design and manufacture cutting-edge medicine and much-needed vaccines, saving numerous lives around the world.

Shopping has been and continues to be a favorite activity in the township. Bridgewater Commons is a major retail attraction, housing nearly a million square feet of retail space that includes Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, and Bloomingdales, as well as 15 other stores and restaurants. Nearby, Bridgewater Village Store and the Somerset County Shopping Center attract and delight customers of all ages. Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply provides uniform rentals, linen rentals, and facility supplies to a broad array of retail, commercial, and industrial enterprises located in Bridgewater Township and throughout the surrounding region.
