Hanover, Pennsylvania, is Home to Makers of all Kinds

Founded by settlers from Baltimore and Philadelphia, Hanover was a subject of contention long before the American Revolution began: Maryland and Pennsylvania both claimed Hanover and the surrounding region as a part of their state. After decades of confusion and tension, the colonies hired English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon to settle the issue once and for all. Their final boundary marking, the Mason-Dixon Line, eventually became known as a metaphor for the drastic political and cultural division between the North and the South.

The historic land dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania is certainly understandable, as Hanover’s location at the far western edge of York County puts it just 19 miles southwest of York and only 54 miles northwest of Baltimore. Today, Hanover is considered by many to be the Snack Food Capital of the United States, due to the proliferation of snack food manufacturers, including Utz Quality Foods and Snyder’s of Hanover (Snyder’s-Lance). Other snack food companies populate the rest of York County, including Stauffer’s (maker of the famous Animal Crackers), York City Pretzel, Martin’s Potato Chips, Gibbles Potato Chips, and Herr’s Snacks. Additionally, vegetables – arguably less snackable but still delicious regional products – are canned here by Hanover Foods and distributed through a host of retail establishments.

Lying at the eastern edge of Pennsylvania’s most productive and prosperous agricultural regions, Hanover is a shopping destination for people living in the surrounding rural areas. The downtown is dotted with a variety of stores, entertainment venues, restaurants, and bars. People also know Hanover for its “Golden Mile” of retail businesses, which features a mixture of big boxes and smaller stores, as well as fast food chains. A more recent development, running parallel to the Golden Mile district, is the Gateway Hanover Shopping Center.

Hanover is a popular place to make and enjoy craft beer, a once-imagined craze that has evolved into a refreshment staple. Craft brewers in Hanover include Miscreation Brewing Company, Something Wicked, Aldus Brewing Company, and Warehouse Gourmet Bistro & Brew Pub.

In addition to being home to makers of great beer, Hanover embraces manufacturers of many types. R.H. Sheppard is a fabricator and manufacturer of power steering and diesel engine pumps for commercial vehicles that, from the 1930s to 1963, made diesel engines for farm tractors, refrigerated railroad cars, rescue craft, and electric generators. Leonhardt Manufacturing makes decorative metal tubing for industries ranging from transportation to fitness. Waltersdorff Manufacturing Company and its high quality, solid wood flooring, mouldings, architectural millwork, and doors were once featured on the television show “Designing Spaces,” in an episode about prestigious homes and fabulous floors. At Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, we’re also value quality and remain committed to providing businesses in and around Hanover, including Hanover Concrete and Hempfing Service Center, with industry-leading uniform rental programs, linen rentals, and facility supplies.
