Reading, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1748 by Richard and Thomas Penn, the sons of William Penn. By the time of the American Revolution, the city’s first industry, iron production, had grown in output to rival England’s own. A related historical note is that Hessian mercenaries, in British employ during the Revolution, were once imprisoned in Reading after being surprised by Washington’s Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River and subsequent capture at Trenton.
