Located in the heart of New York’s Hudson Valley, Middletown is a Bedroom Community with a Service-based Economy

Early settlement of the area that is now Middletown began around 1744, when John Green purchased a part of the Delancy patent. In 1844, the community was considered to be a village, and in 1888 was fully incorporated as a city.

From its earliest days, transportation has been key to Middletown’s success. Founded as a waystation for travelers riding horse-drawn wagons between settlements like Port Jervis (on the Delaware River) and Newburgh (on the Hudson), Middletown exploded, seemingly overnight, from sleepy waypoint to industrial city with the advent of the railroads. Railroads spurred the development of industrial manufacturing in the area, including factories that produced shoes, lawnmower blades, and furniture. These prospered until the 1950s. Today, only Bell Flavors and Fragrances continues manufacturing in Middletown.

With manufacturing’s decline, Middletown has enjoyed growth in the areas of communication, service, and retail. Mediacom Communications Corporations, a cable and pay TV company, is located in the adjacent community of Wallkill. The local newspaper, the Times Herald-Record and its owner, Local Media Group, are both headquartered in Middletown. The Galleria at Crystal Run and a super Walmart, which replaced the Orange Plaza Mall in 2001, serve as the area’s two major retail outlets. The State University of New York (SUNY) Orange, with its main campus in Middletown, has more than 5,500 students, and employs nearly 1,500 full and part-time workers. Dempsey Uniform & Supply has been serving the Middletown business community for years, providing uniform rentals, towel services, and facility supply services to companies like Regional Truck Service, Val Bruni Plumbing and Heating, and Orange County Community College.

Middletown’s location near the end of the commuter railroads connected to New York City has long been a draw for residents who work there in various municipal services, including firefighters and police. Unfortunately, a requirement enacted in 1986 forced New York City municipal workers to live within the city limits, ending the boost to the local economy. However, many others continue to live in Middletown and commute to more southerly metropolitan areas for employment via nearby highways. New York State‘s Route 17 and Interstate 84 – major transporation routes that connect New York City and Binghamton – run right through Middletown. For commuters, the nearby Metro-North rail line terminus in Port Jervis provides reliable service to Hoboken and New York City, via a transfer at Secaucus.
