In Alexandria, Virginia, Prosperity is Rooted in Colonial Rewards and Continual Reinvention

Its origins date back to 1669 when English King Charles II granted English Ship Captain Sir William Berkeley some 6,000 acres as a reward for bringing 120 settlers to the area. In 1730, the Virginia Tobacco Inspection Law forced local tobacco farmers to bring their cash crops to a warehouse at Hunting Creek (present-day Alexandria) for quality control inspection. Later, in 1748, inhabitants of the area petitioned the state legislature to establish a town around the warehouse. A young, aspiring surveyor named George Washington sketched the shoreline for inclusion in the petition, which was granted.

Although the Alexander family was actively involved in this effort and owned land included in the proposed town, the settlement was first was known as Belhaven in honor of a Scottish patriot and politician, John Hamilton, 2nd Lord Belhaven and Stenton. Although the name was never officially approved by the Legislature, it was the colloquial designation used by the Scots who dominated the tobacco trade at the Northern Neck of the Potomac.

By 1779, Alexandria had been officially incorporated by the Virginia legislature. Early commerce flourished, centered on exports of commodities including tobacco, sugar, cotton, wine, and slavery. In fact, the Franklin & Armfield Slave Market sold slaves not only in Virginia, but also in Natchez, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The slave pen was turned into a Union prison during the Civil War, and the Union-occupied city became a destination for escaped slaves.

In the 20th century, business in the area had diversified to include fertilizer, leather, beer, and glass – the latter largely dedicated to the production of bottles for the Robert Portner Brewing Company. When Prohibition forced the closure of the brewery, the business began producing milk bottles.

Located within eyesight of the nation’s Capitol, Alexandria is still an enticing setting for businesses of all kinds, most notably those relating to the Federal Government. Accounting for the some of the largest blocks of employment in the city are the Offices of the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, Agriculture, and Homeland Security. Other major employers include public schools, the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), a major patent law practice, a think tank, and the Washington Metro Transit Authority. A wide range of restaurants, retailers, and professional services employ the balance of Alexandria’s work force. At Dempsey Uniform & Supply, we are proud to support Alexandria’s growth and development, providing uniform rentals, laundry services, and facility supplies to businesses and organizations including Landmark Terrace Associates and the Columbia Firehouse.
