The City of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is a Transportation Hub That’s Really Going Places

While some destination cities in this country are famous for whale watching, sandy beaches, or historical monuments, the city of Carlisle is best known for its incredible array of annual auto events. Sporting the moniker “the Automotive Capitol of Pennsylvania”, Carlisle is the beneficiary of the year-round commerce that results from its car, truck and motorcycle shows. A transportation crossroads, with Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia within a two-hour drive, Carlisle’s reliable influx of thousands of visitors benefits hundreds of area businesses: hotels, restaurants, gas stations, entertainment venues, retailers, souvenir shops, book stores, and more.

As Carlisle continues to evolve with the times and its charming environs attract even more visitors, as well as permanent residents, the need for reliable, high quality suppliers like Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply will also keep growing. Our professional team is pleased to provide uniform rental services to a variety of companies in the Carlisle area, including Cumberland Truck Equipment, Penske, and Kenworth of Pennsylvania.

Employment is fairly diverse in the Carlisle region, with major employers like the U.S. Army and Dickinson College. The College was founded on September 9, 1783, by Benjamin Rush, just after the Treaty of Paris brought a welcome end to the hardships of the American Revolution. As such, Dickinson earned a place in history as the first institution of higher learning chartered in the new United States of America. Following a time during which the famous Dickinson School of Law was affiliated with Dickinson College, it was finally folded into Penn State and renamed the Penn State Dickinson School of Law. Rush, a highly regarded physician from Philadelphia and a revolutionary at heart, was one of the elite group of men whose signatures appear on the Declaration of Independence. Today, the original document is stored, along with the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, in the Rotunda of the National Archives Museum located in Washington, DC.

Historically, Carlisle is known for its role as a critical stop along the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to well-deserved and hard-won freedom in the North. As the first free state located north of the Mason-Dixon line, Pennsylvania was the ground upon which many slaves walked without fear for the first time in their lives. From 1835 – 1848, a man named Daniel Kaufman, along with a number of his associates, hid slaves in safe houses in Carlisle and nearby Boiling Springs. In later year, during the Civil War, Carlisle endured attacks by Confederate soldiers that resulted in cannonball incursions, visible to this day on the walls of the county courthouse.
