Maryland: A Brief Overview

One of this country’s smallest states, Maryland’s diverse climate and topography has actually earned it the nickname America in Miniature. The northernmost state left untouched by glaciers from the last ice age, Maryland somehow escaped the forces that so dramatically impacted Pennsylvania and New York. Because of this lack of glaciation and seismic stability, the state of Maryland has no natural lakes. Not one. The closest thing to a natural lake is a place called Buckel’s Bog, the remains of an ancient body of water thought to have existed during the Pleistocene Era, 15,000-20,000 years ago when short-faced bears and saber-toothed cats roamed the landscape. The last remnant of this lake is evidence of ancient pollen that was discovered by geologists.

Maryland was founded in 1632 by George Calvert, an English nobleman and Roman Catholic, who was granted the land by King Charles I to form a colony where English Catholics could practice their religion in freedom. Taking things one step further, Calvert ensured Maryland was a place of complete religious freedom, similar to William Penn’s colony. By 1649, reproaching a Marylander based on their religion had become a criminal act. Religious freedom in these new colonies evolved into broader religious freedom throughout America and paid a huge dividend: the nation’s talent pool was much larger than in England or other European countries. Catholics, Jews, non-accepted Protestant denominations, and others came together as part of a larger community, bringing with them their extensive and varied skill sets. This vastly increased the number of people contributing to the success of the nation.

Maryland boasts some interesting firsts. The first school in America was King Williams School in Annapolis, established in 1696. The first dental school in the world was the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, which opened in 1840 and is now part of the University of Maryland. The College was the originator of the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (D.D.S.). The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest basilica in the United States, and is considered the design masterpiece of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the Father of American Architecture. In Baltimore, on June 24, 1784, Edward Warren conducted the first successful manned balloon launch in the United States. Maryland is also the home of the first licensed female printer, Dinah Nuthead, and the oldest continuously published newspaper (The Maryland Gazette, founded in 1727).

From its early days, Maryland – also known as the Old Line State – has always been progressive. During the Civil War, even though it was a slave state, it sided with the Union. Today, it boasts the highest median household income of any state in the country and has for some years. The city of Havre de Grace is known as the Decoy Capital of the World and is the site of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. This museum houses one of the finest, most extensive collections of duck decoys on the planet. And while natural lakes are nowhere to be found, only seven of Maryland’s 23 counties lie inland without bordering tidal waters. Jousting is the official state sport, lacrosse the official state team sport, and walking the official state exercise. Yes, it’s true. Maryland has designated an official state exercise and, in fact, was the first state in America to do so.
